15-18 month old sleep details?! There’s so much to know. At this age, your little one is learning so much – including the fact that they have power! This can make for tricky tantrums, bedtime battles, and total nap chaos.
To set up your little one for success, it’s important to have a solid age-appropriate schedule.

Wake windows at this age are typically 5-6.5 hours max.
It’s important not to keep your little one awake for too long; this will cause them to be overtired.
Some parents think that if you keep your child awake longer, they’ll sleep better at night because they’ll be so tired… That is a MYTH! Overtired children have a harder time falling asleep and staying asleep throughout the night. Wake windows are very helpful to follow, but also pay attention to your little one’s sleepy cues as well.
Your toddler is most likely down to 1 nap by this point. Usually, a child will drop down to just 1 nap when they’re about 12-15 months old. Signs that your little one is ready to drop a nap are if they are consistently fighting the second nap or their previously long naps turn into pesky cat naps.
When your 15-18 month old is only taking 1 nap per day, the goal is for that nap to last 2-3 hours.
(I want to add that at this age you should cap the nap at 3 hours.)
Nighttime sleep should average 11-12 hours total.
Speaking of nighttime sleep, be sure to implement a consistent bedtime routine if you haven’t already.
A bedtime routine is a great way to help cue that nighttime sleep is coming.
A bedtime routine doesn’t have to be extravagant or lengthy!
Consider the following for your routine:
- Bath (doesn’t need to be every night)
- Brush teeth
- Diaper and pajamas
- Read a book or two
- Turn on sound machine
- Turn off lights
- Put on sleep sack
- Bed
There is often a sleep regression around the 18 month mark. I best advice for parents dealing with a little one who is having a sleep regression is to stay consistent. A sleep regression usually lasts anywhere from 3-14 days. If the regression has turned into a long-term struggle, let me know! Let’s chat and get them back on track.
