6 Month Old Sleep Schedule + Details to Know

If you have a little one struggling with sleep, you’re in the right place. If you have a 6 month old, you’ve found the exactly the blog post you’ve been looking for! I’m about to give you all the info… 6 Month Old Sleep Schedule + Details to Know.

There’s a lot of new and exciting things happening when your baby turns 6 months old… They could be rolling all over, sitting up independently, trying solids, interested in playing with toys, and staying awake longer during their wake windows.

With all of these changes, it’s likely your little one might experience a developmental sleep regression. However, a sleep regression typically only lasts a few days as long as they already have healthy sleep habits and you reinforce good sleep hygiene.

By this age, their sleep cycles have matured and they are developmentally ready for sleep training if they haven’t begun already.

I wanted to pop in to share the most commonly asked questions that I get regarding 6-month-old sleep; I’m spilling all of the details here.

✨ At 6 months old, a baby should be getting about 14.5 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period. This includes overnight sleep and naps.

✨ Their wake windows average 2.5 hours (wake windows are the time baby wakes up from a sleep until the time they go down for another sleep).

✨ Naps should be much more regular by this time; woohooo! They should be taking 3 naps per day (possibly 2 if they have low sleep needs). The maximum daily total nap time is 3.5 hours, and you should be capping each nap at 2 hours.

✨ Bedtime at this age is best between 7:00-8:00 pm. If your little one is up later than 8:00 pm and is very fussy, it’s likely because they are overtired and wanting to go to sleep.

✨ Sleep Safety:  Assuming baby is rolling, I recommend using a sleep sack. You should never use a weighted sleep sack, these are unsafe. The Burt’s Bees and Kyte sleep sacks are my favorites.

You should still following the ABC’s of safe sleep.

A: Alone in their safe sleep space

B: On their back (it is okay if they roll to their belly on their own during sleep)

C: In their crib

✨ Here’s a sample sleep schedule for you to get an idea of what the day might look like. Remember that you should adjust the schedule based on your baby’s cues and how long their naps last.

7:30 AM wake up

9:30-10:45 AM nap

1:00-2:30 PM nap

5:00-5:30 PM nap

8:00 PM bedtime

✨ Why does my 6-month-old keep waking at night? Truthfully, there are many reasons why your little one is waking in the middle of the night. Usually, it will come back to the fact that they do not yet know how to fall asleep and fall back asleep independently.
