3 Months! Let me guess, either that went by wayyyy too fast… or you’re so ready to finally get out of the newborn stage (because let’s be honest, the newborn stage can be HARD). To prepare you for this next stage of motherhood, I’ve put together this post, 3 Months Old: Sleep Details You Need to Know.
At 3 months old, a schedule can still be somewhat unpredictable; however, if you have yet to try getting your little one into a routine, now is the time.
Your little cutie is more active now. They’re probably smiling at you, babbling, possibly even showing signs of rolling. With all this change comes changes to sleep as well. I’ve taken a few of my most frequently asked questions for 3 month olds and I’m spilling all the details here. ⬇
✨ At 3 months old, a baby should be getting about 15-18 hours of sleep within a 24-hour period. This includes overnight sleep and naps.
✨ Their wake windows range from approximately 75-105 minutes (wake windows is the time baby wakes up from a sleep until the time they go down for another sleep).
✨ Don’t stress if naps are still a little wonky. Naps usually begin to seem a bit more regular around 4-5 months. Typically, a 3 month old will have 4 naps in one day. These naps will often be a little longer in the morning and afternoon with a ‘cat nap’ as the last nap of the day. All naps should be capped at 2 hours with a maximum total of daily nap time being 5-6 hours.
✨ Bedtime at this age is best between 7:00-8:00 pm. If your little one is up later than 8:00 pm and is very fussy, it’s likely because they are overtired and wanting to go to sleep.
✨ Here’s a sample sleep schedule for you to get an idea of what the day might look like. Keep in mind that all babies are different and at this age it’s still pretty unpredictable. So just use this as a flexible guide.
7:30 AM wake up
9:00 – 10:30 AM nap
12:00 – 1:30 PM nap
3:00 – 4:15 PM nap
5:45 – 6:15 PM nap
8:00 PM bedtime
✨ As long as baby is not showing any signs of rolling, it’s okay to keep them swaddled.
