Have a kiddo on the move? Nervous to make that transition from crib to bed? You got this, mama!
I’m sharing with you my 5 top tips for crib to bed transitions that I give to my clients. These tips will help the process to go smoothly and safely.
[Before you dig in, be sure to follow my socials for loads of free tips, guides, humor and more]
Scroll down for the 5 top tips for crib to bed transitions, but first I’d like to mention that I recommend toddlers stay in their crib for as long as possible! The only times I suggest making the transition is if they outgrow their crib or they are climbing out of the crib (obviously making it unsafe). The average age that little ones transition from crib to bed ranges from 18 months to 3.5 years! 😯
Let’s get to it!
1️⃣ Baby proofing the room is the first priority.
This is the first and most important tip of the 5 top tips for crib to bed transitions. If your little one gets out of bed in the middle of the night, you need to know they’ll be safe wandering around their room. Secure dressers and furniture to the wall, make sure no blind/curtain pull cords are hanging within arms reach, install outlet coverings, etc.
2️⃣ Set your expectations and be CONSISTENT.
Make it clear to your child what the boundaries are. A little role play can be great in this situation. Get into the bed yourself or use a doll to show them what you expect. Again, be consistent. If they get out of bed in the middle of the night and jump in bed with you, they’ll realize they can sleep with you if they just get out of their bed.
3️⃣ Make it fun!
Let them know what a big kid they are now that they are sleeping in a bed, but remind them that big kids need to listen to the rules and stay in bed until you come to get them in the morning. Allow them to make some choices so it feels like a big kid privilege (pick out bedsheets, choose their pajamas).
4️⃣ Reward them for staying in their bed all night!
Maybe they get to call their grandparents to brag about their new big kid skill, maybe they get a new sticker, maybe they get to pick out a treat with their breakfast.
5️⃣ Lastly, consider the OK-To-Wake Hatch Clock!
The clock is programmable and changes colors at your chosen times. The colors represent if it is time to sleep or time to get out of bed.
